    Mechanical, stress corrosion cracking and crystallographic study on flat components processed by two combined severe plastic deformation techniques

    Although the current field of application of Al–alloy 7075 (AA7075) is vast, it is still limited due to some drawbacks, especially due to its susceptibility to stress corrosion cracking (SCC). This work aims to evaluate the microstructural, mechanical, and stress corrosion cracking (SCC) behaviors on an AA7075 in flat format deformed by a combination of repetitive corrugation and straightening (RCS) and accumulative roll bonding (ARB) techniques. Four different deformation routes were applied, namely: ARB (A), RCS (R), RCS + ARB (RA) and ARB + RCS (AR). As expected, the efficiency for grain refinement depends on the applied route, in terms of average grain size regarding the initial condition IC): AR > A > RA > R. All conditions resulted in unimodal and widened grain size distributions of micro-, submicro- and nano-metric dimensions. The study of crystallographic orientations showed that route R did not generate any new texture, whereas different preferred orientations were obtained for routes A, RA, and AR. The hardness and three-point bending tests showed an improvement of mechanical strength in the following order: AR > RA > A > R. The cracks per cm2 obtained in the corrosion study indicated that the best SCC resistance was R > A > AR > RA. Based on the above, the best combination of microstructural, mechanical, and SCC properties until one deformation pass was obtained by the single route of the ARB process.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version

    Short-course thrombolysis as the first line of therapy for cardiac valve thrombosis

    AbstractObjective: To retrospectively evaluate the clinical and echocardiographic criteria of thrombolytic therapy for mechanical heart valve thrombosis. Methods: Nineteen consecutive patients with 22 instances of prosthetic heart valve thrombosis (14 mitral, 2 aortic, 3 tricuspid, and 3 pulmonary) were treated with short-course thrombolytic therapy as first option of treatment in absence of contraindications. The thrombolytic therapy protocol consisted of streptokinase (1,500,000 IU in 90 minutes) (n = 18) in one (n = 7) or two (n = 11) cycles or recombinant tissue-type plasminogen activator (100 mg in 90 minutes) (n = 4). Results: Overall success was seen in 82%, immediate complete success in 59%, and partial success in 23%. Six patients without total response to thrombolytic therapy underwent surgery, and pannus was observed in 83%. Six patients showed complications: allergy, stroke, transient ischemic attack, coronary embolism, minor bleeding, and one death. At diagnosis, 10 patients evidenced atrial thrombus by transesophageal echocardiography, 3 of whom experienced peripheral embolism during thrombolysis. Four episodes of rethrombosis were observed (16%). The survivorship was 84% with a mean follow-up of 42.6 months. Conclusions: A short-course of thrombolytic therapy may be considered first-line therapy for prosthetic heart valve thrombosis. The risk of peripheral embolism may be evaluated for the presence of atrial thrombus by transesophageal echocardiography at diagnosis. (J Thorac Cardiobasc Surg 1998;115:780-4

    Repetitive corrugation and straightening effect on the microstructure, crystallographic texture and electrochemical behavior for the Al-7075 alloy

    Anti-corrosion susceptibility is one of the top criteria for selecting metallic materials for several industrial applications. This work studies the corrosion performance on an Al-7075 alloy obtained by Repetitive Corrugation and Straightening (RCS). This processing method generated a microstructure formed by randomly distributed micro-, submicro-, and nano- metric grain sizes. The samples exhibited a drop in corrosion resistance for a longer duration in the electrolyte and higher deformation. However, the samples processed by RCS showed better electrochemical stability in comparison with the non-deformed condition. The improvement of electrochemical stability could be associated with the particular microstructure generated during the RCS process.Postprint (published version

    PTEN Mediates the Antioxidant Effect of Resveratrol at Nutritionally Relevant Concentrations

    Introduction. Antioxidant properties of resveratrol have been intensively studied for the last years, both in vivo and in vitro. Its bioavailability after an oral dose is very low and therefore it is very important to make sure that plasma concentrations of free resveratrol are sufficient enough to be active as antioxidant. Aims. In the present study, using nutritionally relevant concentrations of resveratrol, we aim to confirm its antioxidant capacity on reducing peroxide levels and look for the molecular pathway involved in this antioxidant effect. Methods. We used mammary gland tumor cells (MCF-7), which were pretreated with different concentrations of resveratrol for 48 h, and/or a PTEN inhibitor (bpV: bipy). Hydrogen peroxide levels were determined by fluorimetry, PTEN levels and Akt phosphorylation by Western Blotting, and mRNA expression of antioxidant genes by real-time reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). Results. Resveratrol treatment for 48 h lowered peroxide levels in MCF-7, even at low nutritional concentrations (1 nM). This effect was mediated by the activation of PTEN/Akt pathway, which resulted in an upregulation of catalase and MnSOD mRNA levels. Conclusion. Resveratrol acts as an antioxidant at nutritionally relevant concentrations by inducing the expression of antioxidant enzymes, through a mechanism involving PTEN/Akt signaling pathway

    Influence of left bundle branch block on the electrocardiographic changes induced by acute coronary artery occlusion of distinct location and duration

Objectives: We analyzed the influence of location and duration of myocardial ischemia on the ECG changes in pigs with LBBB. Methods: LBBB was acutely induced in 14 closed chest anesthetized pigs by local electrical ablation. Thereafter, episodes of 5 min catheter balloon occlusion followed by 10 min reperfusion of the left anterior descending (LAD), left circumflex (LCX), and right (RCA) coronary arteries were done sequentially in 5 pigs. Additionally, a 3-h occlusion of these arteries was performed separately in the other 9 pigs. A 15-lead ECG including leads V7 to V9 was continuously recorded. Results: Ablation induced LBBB showed QRS widening, loss of r wave in V1, and predominant R waves in V2 to V9. After 5 min of ischemia the occluded artery could be identified in all cases: the LAD by R waves and ST elevation in V1-V3; the LCX by both ST segment elevation in II, III, aVF, V7 to V9 and ST segment depression in V1 to V4; and the RCA by ST depression and new S-waves in all precordial leads. Three hours after coronary occlusion, ST segment changes declined progressively and only the LAD occlusion could be reliably recognized. Conclusion: LBBB did not mask the ECG recognition of the occluded coronary artery during the first 60 min of ischemia, but 3 h later only the LAD occlusion could be reliably identified. ST elevation in leads V7 to V9 is specific of LCX occlusion and it could be useful in the diagnosis of acute myocardial ischemia in the presence of LBBB

    Highly Anisotropic Organometal Halide Perovskite Nanowalls Grown by Glancing-Angle Deposition

    Polarizers are ubiquitous components in current optoelectronic devices as displays or photographic cameras. Yet, control over light polarization is an unsolved challenge, since the main drawback of the existing display technologies is the significant optical losses. In such a context, organometal halide perovskites (OMHP) can play a decisive role given their flexible synthesis with tunable optical properties such as bandgap and photoluminescence, and excellent light emission with a low non-radiative recombination rate. Therefore, along with their outstanding electrical properties have elevated hybrid perovskites as the material of choice in photovoltaics and optoelectronics. Among the different OMHP nanostructures, nanowires and nanorods have lately arisen as key players in the control of light polarization for lighting or detector applications. Herein, the fabrication of highly aligned and anisotropic methylammonium lead iodide perovskite nanowalls by glancing-angle deposition, which is compatible with most substrates, is presented. Their high alignment degree provides the samples with anisotropic optical properties such as light absorption and photoluminescence. Furthermore, their implementation in photovoltaic devices provides them with a polarization-sensitive response. This facile vacuum-based approach embodies a milestone in the development of last-generation polarization-sensitive perovskite-based optoelectronic devices such as lighting appliances or self-powered photodetectors
